Access Denied on server volume

I recently had to troubleshoot an issue where a server's D: volume was giving Access Denied errors quite suddenly. I was able to see the NTFS permissions which seemed to be correct. I tried running TAKEOWN, CHKDSK /F, ICACLS--all Access Denied. Rebooting failed to make a difference, safe mode, etc.

A colleague suggested removing from the AD Domain and re-adding. It worked! I have no idea why, but it's worth noting here in hopes it helps someone resolve this odd issue.
